The Sunday Section

An abundance of news today, some expected and some not.

Double H may be in the brown runny stuff after allegedly leaving the site of an accident without leaving her details. A witness said “that the leader of the Commons wound down her window and said: "I'm Harriet Harman, you know where you can get me."”

Arrogant or what?

The Irish of course did their leaders bidding and ratified the Lisbon treaty with a 67.1 percent yes vote, leaving only Poland, which is expected to rubber-stamp the treaty within days, and the Czech Republic, where there is a legal challenge, yet to formally ratify the deal.

The UK electorate of course don’t even get a say.

If at first........, democracy at its worst.

A quid a pop

Sara Burden has put every item she owns up for sale for £1 each, including her car and all her clothes.

After pledging £1, buyers could be left with anything from a cotton bud the 31-year-old's VW Polo car.

The project, called Everything and Nothing, will see Mrs Burden, a single mother to four-year-old Sam, left with just a few possessions in a small suitcase.

"Everything I own will go including very personal items like my grandmother’s jewellery and artwork.

"Some items are obviously more sought after than others and buyers could just end up with a mug or cotton bud.

"There are around 40,000 items to go so it's like a huge tombola. There is no telling how successful it will be but on the first day I had hundreds of emails to respond to.
Each item is numbered randomly and anyone expressing an interest will be sent an invoice for £1 plus postage and packing.

Following that they will be sent the item which corresponds with when they sent the message.

The project will run for three months until December 31. People can register their interest at crazyartlady.com

Earlier this year the 31-year-old old became the first person to appear nude on Antony Gormley's Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Ah! That explains it.

That guy from Iran who doesn’t like food; Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Ochmedinnersbad) is really confused.

A photograph of the Iranian president holding up his identity card during elections in March 2008 clearly shows his family has Jewish roots.

A close-up of the document reveals he was previously known as Sabourjian – a Jewish name meaning cloth weaver.

The short note scrawled on the card suggests his family changed its name to Ahmadinejad when they converted to embrace Islam after his birth.

The Sabourjians traditionally hail from Aradan, Mr Ahmadinejad's birthplace, and the name derives from "weaver of the Sabour", the name for the Jewish Tallit shawl in Persia. The name is even on the list of reserved names for Iranian Jews compiled by Iran's Ministry of the Interior.
Experts last night suggested Mr Ahmadinejad's track record for hate-filled attacks on Jews could be an overcompensation to hide his past.

Maybe he should go on ‘Who do you think you are’.

And yet another Tory “pledge”

Work spokesman Chris Grayling told the Tory conference he wanted to end the idea of welfare as an "entitlement".

The Tories plan increases to the amount of support for the unemployed through a network of "back to work" centres run by private and voluntary bodies.

Those repeatedly refusing job offers would lose benefits for three years.

Voluntary and private bodies would be asked to run a network of "back to work centres" and would be paid on the basis of their results in helping people find jobs.

People unwilling to take up the help on offer risk losing their benefits, with those refusing three "reasonable" job offers being excluded from the benefits system for three years.

In addition, those who cannot find work and claim jobseekers allowance for two years will be required to take part in a year-long community work programme.

"No one benefits from sitting at home on benefits," Mr Grayling said.

Further measures would see those on incapacity benefit having to undergo independent medical tests to assess their ability to work.

With the threat of recession looming and unemployment levels steadily rising, Mr Grayling said the reforms were even more vital to supporting the economy.

"Good quality, well delivered welfare reform helps countries cope with more difficult economic times," he added.

The Lib Dems said the Tories' plans would do little to help the long-term unemployed or provide greater incentives to work.

"Only last week they were accusing Labour of failing to make sure that work pays but there is nothing on how the Tories would reverse this trend," said Lib Dem work spokeswoman Jenny Willott.

Heard it all before, we must now be into double figure of “welfare reforms” from Gord’s gang, and it doesn’t work, the economy is buggered, there are no jobs out there; especially for the long term unemployed or the sick.

Volunteering is ‘make work’, that is of course providing the volunteers pass the legal checks which have been forced upon us, if it involves “vulnerable” people.

When the next election comes around be afraid, be very afraid, because no one can hear you scream in the vacuum of politics.
